New Technique to Create Rattan Product

Rattan Carving:
A Collaboration with Rattan Expert, Deny Willy Junaidy Ph.D.

The production of rattan furniture and products generates a substantial volume of rattan waste, particularly in the form of rattan cuts. These cuts are often considered useless and are disposed of as waste. However, there is a growing awareness that these rattan cuts can be repurposed and utilized in innovative ways, leading to a more sustainable and efficient rattan industry. We have been considering a compelling concept for a sustainable product that involves repurposing rattan cut waste from the industry. Our idea is to create rattan bowls, partitions, and packaging using a carving technique. By utilizing rattan cuttings (Waste from the industry) with a length less than 20 cm and a diameter of 5 cm, we could carve and mold these pieces into aesthetically pleasing and functional items. The bowls and panels could serve as versatile home decor and storage solutions, while the packaging could offer an eco-friendly alternative for gift giving or product packaging. This concept would not only reduce waste but also highlight the beauty and versatility of rattan as a sustainable material.
