Utilizing Rattan Waste into an Innovative Rattan Toys
Rattan Toys:
A Collaboration with Rattan Expert, Deny Willy Junaidy Ph.D.
The narrative of our research on utilizing rattan waste to create toys and unconventional rattan products is one of innovation and sustainability. It all started with the recognition of the abundance of rattan waste and the potential to repurpose it into valuable creations. We embarked on a journey to explore the possibilities of transforming this waste material into something meaningful and environmentally friendly. Through our research, creativity, and dedication, we were able to develop processes to turn rattan waste into eco-friendly toys and unique rattan products. This project is not just a story of repurposing waste; it's a testament to the power of creativity, sustainability, and the potential for positive change within the rattan industry.
One of the output of the research is the Rattanimal (Rattan Animal). The concept of the Rattanimal design is a puzzle game that stimulates children's creativity. Using Bisociation theory and Concept Blending works (Koestler, 1974; Nagai, et al., 2009) that combining two different or colliding concepts can produce unfamiliar concepts and have the potential to become creative concepts. So Rattanimal developed a puzzle whose form was actually confused as a concrete animal, a bird like a fish that could crawl or a snake like a buffalo that could fly. This allows children who play to think abstractly and exploratively, things like this are believed to encourage a person's creative thinking process. (source: Apikayu.wordpress.com)
